About Kolasib

Kolasib is one of the important towns located in the district of Kolasib in Mizoram. The town is also the administrative head of the district. The town is bordered by the south and east by Aizawl district, on the west by Mamit district, on the north and northwest by Hailakandi district of Assam and on the northeast by Cachar district of Assam.

History of Kolasib

The city of Kolasib was formed as the center of the Tribal Development Block in the year 1957. Mizoram became a Union Territory, in the year 1972 and Kolasib in the year 1975, became the headquarters of the Sub division. The city of Kolasib became a district in the year 1998.

Demographics of Kolasib

According to the 2011 census, the population of Kolasib town is 18,852. Out of the total population is 51% are males and 49% are females. The average literacy rate here is 82%. The official language of Kolasob is Mizo.

The Kolasib town is located in the district of Kolasib. The head of the district administration is the District Administration. The district has been divided into three sub-divisions for the purpose of general and developmental administration which are Kolasib Sadar, Vairengte and Kawnpui.

Tourism in Kolasib

Kolasib is a nature’s paradise, and is more popular for the beautiful picturesque picnic spots and landscapes it offers to the tourists. The 185 kms long Tlwang River flows through the district. The river banks provide a good picnic spot and are ideal for fishing. The river is close to the Regional Rubber Research Centre and the Bairabi Hydel project which one can have a look into. There is also the town of Vairengte which has amazing landscapes and infectious natural beauty to charm tourists. There are some worth visiting sites in and around the town that mentioned below.

Tlawng River: This is the longest river in Mizoram. It is one of the favorite picnic spot as well. This River can also be seen from Kolasib.

Tamdil: It is a popular picnic spot and it is also called Tam Lake. Tamdil is blessed with beautiful surrounding and also an ideal place for fishing. Boating facility is also available here.

Vairengte: It is located about 130km from Aizawl, in the district of Kolasib. It is an absolute traveler’s with the surrounding covered with greenery. The hilly landscape and thick forests adds to the beauty of the place. Another very beautiful sight here is the orchids blooming in plenty in the surrounding valleys and hills. It is a major tourist place in Kolasib , and the tourist love the pollution free environment here.

Regional Research Station: It is also another important tourist spot here. It is an informative centre and the Research Station deals with the research of rubber.

How to Reach Kolasib

Kolasib can be easily reached by taxi and bus from Aizawl and nearby places. The distance between Aizawl and Kolasib is 83 km and there are regular bus and taxi service from Aizawl to Kolasib. Pawan Hans has also started a helicopter service connecting Aizawl with Kolasib. There is no airport in Kolasib. The nearest airport is the Aizawl Airport. Kolasib also does not have any Railway Station and the closest railway station is Silchar Railway station.
